Jaiswal, A., Masters, C., Jin, L., Inani, T., Schenkel, A., Sapkota, M., & Krishnan, L. (2023). It's Never Too Soon! Comparing Intercultural Learning Outcomes of Undergraduate Students via Face-to-Face and Online Teaching Modalities.
Providing culturally responsive care for a diverse patient population is critical for future speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Prior studies have shown gains in intercultural competence (ICC) from study abroad programs, face-to-face classes, and online courses; however, limited studies have investigated differences between face-to-face and online modes of delivery in speech-language pathology and audiology. The purpose of this study was (a) to evaluate whether there are quantitative differences in development of ICC in a direct comparison of a face-to-face and 100% asynchronous online introductory in communication disorders, and (b) to describe participants learning through the structural intercultural learning activities embedded into the course using a qualitative approach.

DiBiasio, P. A., Vallabhajosula, S., & Eigsti, H. J. (2023). Assessing cultural competence: a comparison of two measures and their utility in global learning experiences within healthcare education. Physiotherapy, 118, 97-104.
The study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the two instruments Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI) and Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence among healthcare professionals-Student Version© (IAPCC-SV) in the measuring cultural competence for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. The participants of the study are First Year Students (n=78) and Third Year students (n=82). The assessment for the First Year Students were conducted within four weeks of start of the program and for the Third Year students it was conducted four weeks prior to the graduation. The results of study showed that there was significantly low association between three construct scores of Cultural Knowledge, Skill, and Desire with IDI PO scores. Also there was low association between as well as the IAPCC-SV total, and the constructs of Cultural Knowledge and Skill with the IDI DO scores. Overall there was significantly low relationship between constructs of IDI and IAPCC-SV. The study concluded that the  both the instruments measures different constructs of the cultural competence therefore instruments showed a low significant relationship IDI and IAPCC-SV scores.

Harris, M. D. (2022). The Efficacy of a Service-Learning Experience in the New Orleans Area in Improving Intercultural Competence of Nutrition and Dietetics Students. University of North Florida.
There is a large gap between minority representation in the field of dietetics and the United States population, and nutrition students need advanced cultural competence training in preparation for future work with diverse populations. Universal recommendations for delivering and evaluating cultural competence training in nutrition programs are non-existent, and students tend to lack understanding of how to develop this skill. Service-learning in underserved communities with reflective assignments have been used to develop cultural competence skills, but most reported results are anecdotal. This non-randomized mixed methods study sought to find out if a service-learning experience improves intercultural competence of nutrition students more than a self-guided approach. The intervention involved completing a pre-and-post IDI survey, a two-week service-learning experience in the city of New Orleans or self-guided approach with reflective assignments, and post-experience focus groups. Students were recruited through brief informational announcements during classes and via email. Wilcoxin Ranked Signs results indicated improved IDI scores for both the control and experimental groups and there was evidence of skill attainment when reflective assignments were compared to the Campinha-Bacote Model of Cultural Competence.

Balosbalos-Arado, M. S. (2022). Understanding the Development of the Intercultural Sensitivity of Personnel in the US Armed Forces (Doctoral dissertation, University of Minnesota).
Given the nature of recent and anticipated military engagements, there is growing interest in infusing more cultural learning into U.S. military training to prepare military personnel more effectively to respond to security challenges in international theaters of operation as part of increasingly diverse U.S. Armed Forces. Costly errors and painful lessons from U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq since the early 2000s amplified this need and convinced the Department of Defense that its military personnel must have the necessary knowledge, skills, and intercultural competence to meet the demands of frequent and challenging complex multicultural engagements. This study contributes significantly to the state of knowledge about the level of intercultural sensitivity of U.S. military personnel and the personal and professional factors underlying these orientations. A multimethod protocol involving the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), surveys, and in-depth interviews generated data on 64 service members, including enlisted personnel and officers, who studied at a military language school from 2006–2021.

Karkour, I. (2022). Intercultural competence in elementary-level language classes in higher education. In Enhancing Beginner-Level Foreign Language Education for Adult Learners (pp. 95-112). Routledge.
This study aims to explore the status quo of integrating culture into elementary-level world language classes in higher education and the related impact these classes have on students’ intercultural sensitivity. The survey of five world language classes in a North American University employed the Intercultural Development Inventory to find that learning a language for a semester did not result in any progress in students’ intercultural sensitivity, except for one language class that showed a slight increase. The study examines the current degree of intercultural competence among beginning-level foreign language students and discusses some strategies for improving students’ intercultural sensitivity in world language classes. The chapter hopes to continue a current academic conversation about cultural differences, diversity, inclusion, and intercultural sensitivity in elementary-level language classes at American universities.
